A Written Account Of A Backpacker's Journeys

By Sue Hamrick

There are many reasons for backpacking - recreation, adventure or simply to get away from it all. You will have plenty of experiences which however will be soon forgotten. Come to think of it, it would be very interesting to keep an account of your backpacking odysseys.

Backpacking Journals

Is there anything noteworthy that happened during your last backpacking adventure? Can you recall of anything that caught your attention? Now think about the first time you ever went backpacking. You remember the places you went through and the people you met, the trails and the scenery, and what else? The experiences you've forgotten are lost to time. A pity that you failed to make any record of your backpacking experiences.

There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Anne Frank's diary is perhaps the most known and read since its discovery. The diary chronicles Anne's life for a period of two years while in hiding from Nazi persecution. The point of keeping a journal is to make permanent noteworthy events and experiences that would otherwise be lost and forgotten with the passage of time.

There are things that you must observe when keeping a travel journal. The journal must be small for easy stowing and to save on backpack space. Second, it must be in a waterproof and durable holder or container to protect against liquid and material damage. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include.

Your backpacking companions,

Where you backpacked and if you enjoyed it,

Who you met and contact information for them,

The geographic and weather conditions,

The roads taken and your farthest reaches, and

Interesting tidbits you noted along the way.

At the end of the trip, you should be able to get the following from your journal.

Details about personages directly or otherwise involved,

Comprehensive notes of landmarks and observations that will allow you to retrace your steps the next time around.

The highlights of your journey for reminiscing.

An interesting written account of experiences for future reading.

Write your accounts while the events are still fresh in your mind, on the trail or soon after. Each backpacking is a unique experience that you should write about.

The backcountry is an excellent place to appreciate nature. It deserve to be recorded for the future.
